Audition Requirements:

Preparation:

  • Please prepare a monologue from a modern play or a classic piece with a contemporary interpretation (2-3 minutes).

  • Be ready to read sides from the script.

What to Expect:

  • Auditions will consist of prepared monologues and cold readings from the script.

  • Callbacks may include additional readings and group scenes.

We are looking for actors who can bring a fresh, modern energy to Wilde's characters while honoring the original text's wit and nuance. We look forward to seeing you at auditions.

We are excited to announce auditions for our upcoming production of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, "An Ideal Husband," reimagined with a contemporary twist! This modern adaptation will maintain Wilde's sharp, witty script while updating the setting to reflect today's world, complete with modern costumes and references directed by Eden Ross.

 

About the Play: "An Ideal Husband" is a timeless exploration of morality, love, and the complexities of social expectations. Set in the vibrant world of contemporary politics and high society, the story follows Sir Robert Chiltern, a respected politician whose career and marriage are threatened by a scandalous secret from his past. With the arrival of the cunning and manipulative Mrs. Cheveley, Sir Robert must navigate the treacherous waters of blackmail, honor, and redemption. The play is filled with Wilde's trademark wit and satirical humor, offering a sharp critique of society that remains as relevant today as ever.

Characters

  • Sir Robert Chiltern (30-40s): A successful politician with a hidden past. He's extremely ambitious but suffers from a decidedly nervous and harried temperament.

  • Lady Gertrude Chiltern (30s): Sir Robert's idealistic and devoted wife.

  • Mrs. Cheveley (30s): A scheming and sophisticated antagonist.

  • Lord Goring (30s): A charming and witty bachelor, friend to Sir Robert.

  • Mabel Chiltern (20s): Sir Robert's lively and spirited sister.

  • Lord Caversham (50-70s): Father to Lord Goring serving as Sir Roberts model as an old-fashioned gentleman.

  • Lady Markby (50-70s): A pleasant older woman who struggles with the effects of politics and higher education of women in married life.

  • Lady Basildon and Mrs. Marchmont (20-40s): These delicate and charming women engage in frivolous banter about politics, seriousness, and education at Sir Robert's dinner party.

  • Vicomte de Nanjac (20s): A young French attaché known for his fashion and love of English culture. He provides comic relief at Sir Robert's dinner party with his awkward speech and humorous malapropisms.

  • Mr. Montford (20-30s): Sir Robert's impeccably groomed young secretary who appears briefly to escort Mrs. Marchmont to dinner in Act I.

  • Phipps (20-30s): Lord Goring's ideal butler, known for his impassive demeanor and perfect manners. He provides comic relief in Act IV through his interactions with Lord Goring.

  • James (20s): Lord Goring's footman, who has a minor role showing Mrs. Cheveley into Lord Goring's library in Act III and withdrawing on Phipps' cue.

  • Mason (30-50): Sir Robert Chiltern's butler, responsible for announcing guests at the dinner party in Act I.

  • Harold (20-30s): Sir Robert's footman who makes a brief appearance in Act IV.
